Q&A: I feel very sleepy and drowsy in the morning. Is this normal?

14/6/2016

This is normal for a lot of people, but it is not ideal, and there are things you can do to improve the situation. While I agree that seeing a doctor can be helpful, there may be other simpler and cheaper steps you can take to improve the situation.

First you need to answer these questions:
  1. How long has this been going on?
  2. Has it been every morning or random?
  3. How many hours of sleep are you getting on the days this happens vs the days it doesn’t happen?
  4. What is your sleep hygiene like?
    1. Is your bed comfortable for you or do you wake up in pain?
    2. Is your room completely dark or is there light pollution - especially blue light?
    3. What have you had to drink and eat in the hours before going to bed? Have you had any alcohol or caffeinated drinks?
    4. Are there any other disturbances in the evening, like pets in the room, small children, or getting up to go to the bathroom, etc?
    5. Do you look at your smartphone or computer screen within an hour of going to sleep?
  5. Are you frustrated by things or thoughts that occurred the previous day, or perhaps worried about the day you are beginning?

All of these things are known to negatively affect your sleep quality if you don’t control them, and they can have the effect of leaving you feeling drowsy and sleepy in the morning, even if you don’t perceive a problem with any of your current habits.

Get the answers to these questions for yourself. Tackling them one by one will help you fix the problem. Some may even be fun and improve your life as a whole.

If fixing these things doesn’t help, you will still benefit from having these answers to give to your doctor. Doctors typically don’t have time to go over your personal history and consider all these factors during a 15-minute appointment. If you have these answers at the start, you will be giving yourself the best chance of fixing it.
